ASIC(Application Specific Integrated Circuit)

An ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) is a custom-designed semiconductor (LSI) tailored for a specific application or function.
Unlike general-purpose CPUs or GPUs, an ASIC eliminates unnecessary circuitry and is optimized for dedicated tasks, achieving high processing speeds and low power consumption. It is widely used in deep learning accelerators for AI, autonomous driving systems, and cryptocurrency mining.
On the other hand, its difference from a SoC (System on Chip)—which integrates an entire system's functionality onto a single chip—lies in its versatility and scope of integration. While a SoC is a multifunctional system-on-a-chip that incorporates CPUs, memory, and communication functions, an ASIC is designed primarily to maximize performance for specific workloads. (Note: In advanced applications, ASIC design methodologies are sometimes used to build a SoC.)
While the upfront investment (NRE costs) and development time required from design to launch need to be taken into account, implementing ASICs in products with sufficient production volume can significantly reduce the unit cost per chip.
