1. Glossary

Payload

Payload refers to the maximum load capacity excluding the airframe and battery. Put simply, it is the maximum weight a drone can safely lift and fly, which includes not only delivery cargo but also devices like cameras, sensors, and LiDAR.

■ Payload Calculation Formula:

Payload (Maximum Load Capacity) = Maximum Takeoff Weight − (Airframe + Battery)
(Example: For a drone with a maximum takeoff weight of 10 kg and a combined airframe and battery weight of 7 kg, the maximum payload capacity is 3 kg.)

In recent years, increasing payload capacity has become a key requirement in the industrial drone market to enhance operational efficiency; however, a larger payload is not always better. Increasing payload leads to higher power consumption, resulting in shorter flight times. In addition, to maintain flight stability, keeping the onboard load within the payload limit is extremely important. Exceeding the payload exerts a heavy burden on the drone, causing physical risks of flight accidents and legal risks of violating maximum takeoff weight regulations. Optimal payload design suited to the application and the development of highly efficient power supply and battery technologies are essential.
