1. In-house ring magnets with low cogging torque and vibration

Cogging torque in brushless DC motors is a major source of mechanical vibration and airborne noise. Featuring a heavy-rare-earth-free integrated ring magnet instead of segmented magnets, MinebeaMitsumi drone motors reduce cogging torque by 63% compared to the competitor model *1, ensuring smooth rotation. This structure reduces resonance and minimizes vibration noise and image blur in cameras or other payloads.

2. High-efficiency via reduced flux leakage design

  • Foreign objects prevention & maintenance minimization

Using magnetic field analysis and magnetization expertise, we re-engineered and optimized the magnets to minimize flux leakage.
Keeping the magnetic flux within the motor housing prevents foreign objects such as iron sand from sticking to the exterior.
This design reduces the need for routine cleaning, saving maintenance time and effort.

  • High efficiency and low power consumption

By focusing magnetic flux density into the core teeth, this motor minimizes energy loss, achieving efficient operation.
To further reduce power consumption, we recommend optimal winding configurations tailored to your specific operational needs.

3. Equipped with rust- and corrosion-resistant Giga Protection®bearings

Our drone motors are equipped with proprietary Giga Protection® ball bearings as standard. These bearings achieve over 500 times the rust and corrosion resistance of our standard stainless steel bearings*2. They ensure rust-free performance in harsh environments such as exposure to seawater and rain, improving drone reliability for outdoor operations, offshore inspections, and inter-island logistics.

FAQ

What is "cogging" in motors?

It is the torque ripple (a notchy resistance) caused by internal magnetic forces when the motor shaft rotates.

In brushless DC (BLDC) motors, cogging torque is a major source of mechanical vibration and noise. To suppress vibration transmission to onboard equipment and ensure smooth rotation and quiet operation, it is important to select a motor with low cogging torque. MinebeaMitsumi products minimize cogging torque to deliver smooth rotation.

How should I select a motor based on total drone weight and payload?

We recommend selecting a motor where hovering requires approximately 40% to 50% of maximum thrust.

Maintaining this thrust margin provides the power required for attitude control and rapid ascents during gusts. It also keeps motor heat and battery consumption at optimal levels to ensure stable flight.

What are the main factors affecting motor lifespan?

The main factors are physical wear and corrosion of the internal bearings, and thermal degradation of the coils due to overload.

For industrial drones that frequently operate outdoors, bearing degradation from dust and salt damage significantly shortens motor life. MinebeaMitsumi drone motors ensure long-term stability by maintaining appropriate thrust margins to reduce heat, utilizing rust-resistant Giga Protection® bearings, and applying an energy-efficient magnetic circuit.

Do you also offer other components for drone integration?

Yes, MinebeaMitsumi provides a comprehensive range of precision components that support full drone systems.

In addition to drive parts such as motors and bearings, we provide GNSS antennas for communication and control, power ICs (power management and battery protection), and motors for gimbal mechanisms. We also supply a comprehensive product lineup for ground infrastructure like drone ports. To explore our lineup for drones, please click here.

Do you offer customization besides the standard BL76 IP model?

Yes, we accept customization requests.

How much longer is the lifespan of a brushless DC motor compared to a brushed DC motor?

It is typically over 10 times longer, depending on operating conditions and brush materials.

While a brushed motor's lifespan is limited by brush/commutator friction and electrical spark wear, a brushless motor's lifespan is determined by bearing grease degradation and electronic circuit longevity. Brushed motors average 200 to 1,000 hours, whereas brushless motors can last for several thousand hours or more.

What are the disadvantages of brushless DC motors?

The primary disadvantages are higher upfront costs compared to brushed DC motors, and the need for a dedicated driver (drive circuit).

Brushless DC motors cannot operate simply by connecting a power supply directly to them. Because an IC and PCB are required to control current switching, the initial cost is higher than that of brushed DC motors.

Why do brushless DC motors require a driver circuit?

To precisely switch the direction of the coil current in sync with the rotor's position.

Unlike brushed DC motors, they lack mechanical contacts that automatically switch the current. An electronic circuit must perform this function to maintain motor rotation.

How is the rotation speed of a brushless DC motor controlled?

The rotation speed is controlled by finely switching the timing of the electrical current.

Specifically, increasing the voltage results in higher speeds, and decreasing it results in lower speeds. PWM and VSP control are the primary methods used for this speed adjustment.

What are the specific applications for brushless DC motors?

They are widely used in drones, air conditioners, refrigerator compressors, cordless vacuum cleaners, and electric vehicle (EV) drive units.

Because they lack wearing parts (brushes), they feature long service life, quiet operation, and high efficiency. These characteristics make them an essential power source for products requiring these three features.
